Automatic lawn mowers usually require a one time simple set-up, which can be easily done by anyone. The automatic mower can then be left to its own devices. A wire is laid around the outer edge of the lawn, and attached to the surface of the lawn with pegs every few metres. The wire is then connected to a small battery powered current source called Perimeter Switch. Typically the wire will be covered by grass and become unnoticeable in a matter of 2-3 weeks. The automatic lawn mower then recognizes the wire using a special sensor, and makes sure it always stays inside the designated area. The lawn mower then travels on the lawn in a systematic criss-cross pattern covering the lawn several times from side to side to ensure that the entire lawn is covered and the grass is cut from several angles. As it regularly does this ther are no grass cuttings to pick up, so no box ever needs emptying.

Lawn Suitability

At the moment all automatic lawn mwers on the market are quite small, hence they are best suited to small gardens. They are good for the lawn as they mow it very regularly and as the cuttings are very fine, they are left to return valuable nutrients back to the lawn.

Automatic mowing offers exclusive safety features as you are not physically invlved in the lawn mowing process yourself. Hence, no more bad backs from struggling with a hover, no more lifting a heavy lawn mower out of your garden shed or garage. Most come with sensor equipped bumpers, mower lift detection, and child locks.

Maintenance

Automatic lawn mowers are a relatively new breed of lawn mower and as yet need very little maintenance. However, if you did need to get your automatic lawn mower looked at or fixed it, it may be an expensive and time consuming affair.

Cost

Due to the relative newness of automatic lawn mowers, they are quite expensive with prices starting at £400 ranging up to £1000.
